About Erica
My name is Erica Matewish and I have been a photographer for the past 10 years.
A lot of people ask me how I started in photography and I’d have to say it all began when I was young. I had a love for Anne Geddes, specifically her newborn work. As well as the classic milk ads made me have a love for portraits. National geographic was always so fascinating to me as well.
I was a nanny, surrounded by children and became an ECE teacher. I always had a love for children and they seemed to always gravitate towards me.
Then I had my son Kai and bought my first camera. I started playing around, photographing him and my friends' kids, and that's when my love for photography blossomed.
A little about me:
What do you do when you're not working?
I love travelling! Thanks to my mom, I have always had the travel bug - I have been to so many countries! I've also lived in New Zealand and Australia. I love experiencing different cultures and going off the beaten path! I have two kids ( ages 9 & 12) who are my world, we love playing board games, doing crafts and exploring our beautiful province and our golden retriever is usually tagging along with us.
What do you love about your job?
It's crazy to me that this is my job! I seriously never have a day that I don't want to go to work.
It's an amazing feeling when clients trust my vision, and it yields beautiful results. Capturing connections between loved ones is incredibly special to me. Creating timeless portraits is so fulfilling for me because these are images that your great-grandchildren will cherish!
I also love that I get to meet so many amazing people, and travel to some amazing places too!
What inspires you?
My kids, travel, photography and being around like-minded, positive people.
I hope that I always have a job that pushes my creativity and challenges me mentally - it keeps things interesting.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Leaving my full-time “cush” job that was 9-5 and a guaranteed paycheque to running a business on my own and opening my photo studio was a big jump, but my biggest accomplishment by far.
I would’ve never believed you if you told me I would have my own studio on Lonsdale. I walked by this building all the time and I would think to myself, "one day I will be in there." I didn’t even know what for, but it was my dream. A year later, a lease sign came up, I took the leap, and after a bunch of renos, we are still here, 9 years later! It’s a dream come true.
